Details Introduction
The hollow shaft of a ball mill is a key component bearing the rotation of the ball mill cylinder, which is generally made of Grade 35 cast steel with high casting requirements. There shall be no casting defects such as blowholes and sand holes on the neck in contact with the ball mill spherical bearing bush and the arc neck in contact with the cylinder. In terms of processing, the part in contact with the spherical bearing bush shall be ground after machining to ensure precision and finish.

The hollow shaft is a critical component of the entire mill. Due to its special shape and the presence of R-zones, no obvious casting defects such as shrinkage cavities, slag inclusions, segregation and cracks are allowed on the hollow shaft after finish machining. Casting defects are one of the important causes of hollow shaft fracture.

Hollow shafts of ball mills are generally large cast steel parts, some of which weigh more than ten tons. Stress concentration often exists in the castings, so the blank of the hollow shaft shall be subjected to aging treatment during machining; otherwise, residual stress concentration will remain inside the hollow shaft. Therefore, excessive stress concentration during the operation of the hollow shaft under alternating stress will also cause cracks on the hollow shaft.

Restricted by certain conditions, some manufacturers cannot cast the hollow shaft as a whole and have to cast it in sections and then weld it into a single unit. However, if the welding quality and post-weld heat treatment quality of the sectionally cast hollow shaft cannot be guaranteed, hardened structures, stress concentration and microcracks will be generated, which will compromise the quality of the hollow shaft.
